This programme is designed for students who want to develop technical expertise in measuring, controlling, and automating industrial systems used in modern engineering environments. It is ideal for learners who need additional academic preparation before entering a full engineering degree and who are interested in automation, instrumentation, and control technologies.
The Foundation Year provides essential knowledge in mathematics, physics, engineering principles, and problem-solving skills. It helps students build confidence and prepares them for more advanced study in engineering disciplines.
After progressing to the main degree, students study key areas such as instrumentation systems, control engineering, electrical circuits, automation systems, industrial electronics, sensors, and process control. The course focuses on how industrial systems are monitored and controlled to ensure safety, efficiency, and reliability.
Students also explore advanced topics such as digital control systems, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), industrial automation, robotics basics, and system integration. They learn how engineering systems are used in industries such as manufacturing, energy, oil and gas, and process industries.
A key feature of this programme is the optional industry placement year, which gives students real-world experience in engineering environments. This helps them develop professional skills, industry knowledge, and employability.
Practical learning is central to the course, with laboratory work, simulation exercises, and engineering design projects. Students gain hands-on experience in building and analysing control systems and instrumentation setups.
The programme also develops transferable skills such as problem-solving, teamwork, communication, analytical thinking, and project management. These are essential for engineering careers in modern industries.
Teesside University provides modern engineering laboratories, experienced academic staff, and industry-aligned teaching based on UK engineering standards. The course prepares students for technical and industrial engineering roles.
Graduates can pursue careers in automation engineering, control systems engineering, instrumentation engineering, process control, manufacturing systems, and industrial engineering sectors.
The standard duration of this programme is 3 years, with flexible study options available depending on your chosen pathway:
