Course Overview

This programme is designed for students who want to support people of all ages in overcoming physical, mental, or social challenges that affect their ability to carry out everyday activities. It focuses on enabling independence, improving quality of life, and promoting wellbeing through practical, person-centred care.

At Teesside University, students study core areas such as human anatomy and physiology, psychology, occupational therapy theory, rehabilitation techniques, and health and social care practice. The course helps students understand how illness, injury, or disability can affect daily living.

Students learn how to assess individual needs and develop tailored intervention plans that help people regain or improve their independence in activities such as self-care, work, and leisure.

The programme also explores mental health, disability studies, public health, and social inclusion. Students gain insight into how environmental and social factors influence a person’s ability to participate in everyday life.

Practical learning is central to the course, with placements in hospitals, community health services, rehabilitation centres, and social care settings. These real-world experiences help students develop professional competence and confidence.

Key skills developed include communication, empathy, problem-solving, critical thinking, and teamwork. These are essential for working effectively with service users, families, and multidisciplinary teams.

Teesside University provides modern simulation facilities, experienced academic staff, and practice-based learning aligned with UK Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) standards. The course ensures students are fully prepared for professional registration.

Graduates can work as occupational therapists in hospitals, community health services, mental health services, rehabilitation centres, and social care organisations.
